In January 1916, Benjamin Ives Gilman published a set of photographs of a man looking at things in a museum. The man was, by Gilman's account, intelligent, well sighted and thoroughly used to museums. He had been handed a list of simple questions about objects on display and instructed to answer them with the least possible exertion, holding each position long enough to be photographed. The resulting pictures show a grown adult crouching, stooping, twisting his neck and folding himself nearly double in front of glass cases.

Gilman's verdict was blunt. "Not even the hardiest sight-seer will long go through with the contortions which the pictures indicate are needed for any comprehension of much of what we display to him." He called the condition museum fatigue, and he was scrupulous about not claiming the phrase: it was, he wrote, "an admitted evil, hitherto tacitly accepted as admitting only relief." What he added was the diagnosis. The exhaustion was not a failure of curiosity or character. It was a failure of cabinet height, label placement and the absence of anywhere to sit.

That distinction is the most useful thing anyone has said about trip planning, and it was said, by Gilman's own account, about a building in Boston that had already been replaced by the time the photographs ran. By day four of a well-intentioned holiday, most people conclude that something is wrong with them. They are ungrateful, or unfit, or too old for this. Almost always the itinerary did it, and the itinerary was built by someone with no data about how a day actually spends itself.

A travel day is not a day

Sports medicine draws a line that most itineraries ignore. Travel fatigue and jet lag are two different problems that happen to arrive together. A 2021 review and consensus statement in Sports Medicine defines jet lag as following any journey that rapidly crosses three or more time zones. Travel fatigue is separate: a multi-domain disturbance caused by the demands of the journey itself, occurring "regardless of the mode of transport (road, rail, plane), the travel direction or the number of time zones crossed". It can be acute after one long haul, or cumulative across repeated trips.

Read that again with a two-week, six-city itinerary in mind. The four-hour train between cities buys you no jet lag at all, and still costs you a day of function. There is no time-zone loophole. Moving is the expense.

Then there is the arithmetic, which is worse than it looks. A mid-morning departure eats the morning, the transfer and the first hour of the afternoon, and deposits you somewhere with luggage and no orientation. An evening arrival eats the evening. The hours that survive on either side are the low-quality ones: too early for the site to open, too late to start anything.

Operators quietly confirm this. The Louvre publishes not one closing time but three: the museum shuts, last entry is an hour before that, and visitors are asked to leave the exhibition rooms half an hour before closing. An arrival that lands you at the door ninety minutes before closing buys you sixty minutes of galleries and a march to the exit. The clock on the door is not the clock you get.

Two nights is one day

The rule that fixes most itineraries is arithmetic, not taste. Two nights in a city gives you exactly one whole day. Three nights gives you two. One night gives you nothing but a bed between two travel days, and a morning spent working out where to leave your bag.

So: nowhere gets fewer than two nights. Anywhere that took a long-haul flight to reach gets at least three, for reasons the next section makes concrete. Consecutive one-night stops are the single reliable way to arrive home needing a holiday.

The objection is always the same, that this means seeing fewer places. It does. It also means the places you do see are seen by a person capable of noticing them. Four cities properly is a different holiday from seven cities badly, and only one of them survives contact with a delayed connection.

One anchor a day, because the sites now insist

The old model, wander until something catches your eye, has been quietly abolished at the places people most want to go. Sites do not sell you a day any more. They sell you a slot.

The Anne Frank House states it flatly. The house, its ticket page says, "can only be visited with a ticket bought online for a specific time slot", and the same rule covers children under ten and holders of discount cards. Tickets go on sale in weekly batches rather than continuously. Machu Picchu goes further. Under a 2023 ministerial resolution, Peru's Ministry of Culture replaced the older scheme with three circuits grouping ten defined routes, in force since June 2024, four of them available only in high season. You do not buy entry to the site. You buy one route through it, at one time, walked in one direction. The Uffizi sells named, personal, non-transferable tickets, with reservation compulsory on its combined Uffizi and Vasari Corridor ticket, and its own site keeps a standing notice board of artworks temporarily off display and spaces temporarily shut.

The planning consequence is mechanical. Every fixed-time entry you add to a day converts the hours before it into a countdown. Two anchors in one day means two countdowns joined by a transit leg you have not tested, and the second appointment turns the first into something you rush. One anchor a day, plus a written list of soft options that can be dropped without loss, is not a modest ambition. It is the only version that survives a late train.

It also means reading the operator's own page rather than an aggregator's. Closures for restoration, weather and building work are announced by the site and repeated nowhere reliable. A room, a wing or an entire palace can be shut for a year without any of the listicles noticing.

Plan around jet lag rather than fighting it

The resynchronisation rates are the useful numbers. As a rule of thumb, the Sports Medicine consensus gives roughly half a day per time zone travelling west, about two hours of adjustment per day, and about a full day per time zone travelling east, roughly one hour per day. Westward flights delay your clock, which is the easier direction. Eastward flights require it to advance, which is not.

Apply that to a common case. Eight time zones eastward is, on those figures, about eight days of gradual realignment. On a ten-day trip, that is most of the trip. If days one to three are scheduled as your most demanding, you have arranged to spend the best content of the holiday on the worst version of yourself. The fix costs nothing: put the low-demand things first. A long walk, a market, a park, a meal booked early, a bath, a bed. Put the six-hour site on day three or four, when the body has caught up enough to notice it.

Light does the actual work. The National Institute of General Medical Sciences is direct about the mechanism: nothing else shifts a circadian rhythm as forcefully as the alternation of daylight and darkness, and the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the master clock sitting in the brain, sets melatonin production according to how much light the eyes are taking in. The NHS translates this into instructions that are almost annoyingly simple: get outdoors while it is light, set an alarm so you do not oversleep, and stay awake until night. Daytime sleeping is the most tempting and most counterproductive thing available on arrival day.

The NHS also notes something usually left out: for a trip of two to three days, consider not adjusting at all. Keep home eating and sleeping times where you can, and save yourself two adjustments instead of one.

On melatonin, the honest position is that the strongest evidence is old and the strongest official advice contradicts it. The 2002 Cochrane review examined ten randomised trials and found that in eight of them a dose timed near the traveller's intended bedtime at the destination reduced jet lag after flights across five or more zones. Daily amounts anywhere between 0.5 and 5 mg performed about as well as each other, with one exception the review is careful to record: 5 mg got people to sleep quicker, and kept them asleep better, than 0.5 mg did. Above 5 mg, nothing further was gained.

That same review carries two cautions the enthusiastic write-ups tend to skip. Its abstract notes case reports of harm in two groups, people with epilepsy and people taking warfarin. And timing is not a detail. Swallowed early in the day rather than near bedtime, the review says, melatonin is "liable to cause sleepiness and delay adaptation to local time". A mistimed dose does not merely fail. It sets you back.

The NHS does not hedge, either. Its jet lag page names the drug and turns it down: melatonin tablets "are not recommended on the NHS for jet lag because there's not enough evidence to show they work". That is a flat disagreement with the 2002 review about the same intervention, not a nuance, and it is why this section ends in a shrug rather than a recommendation. What is also not uniform is how melatonin is sold and regulated, which is not the same in every country, so anyone planning to carry it should check the rules at both ends rather than assume.

When cathedral fatigue sets in

It will, and it is measurable. A 2026 study at the ETRU museum in Rome tracked 61 visitors' positions and heart rates continuously through a visit. Across the sample, viewing time fell steadily while heart rate rose, a combination worth sitting down with. The two halves do not generalise equally, though. The decline in viewing time held across every cluster of visitors the study defined; the heart-rate trend varied with individual characteristics. So the dependable finding is the deflating one. Everybody looks at less and less as the visit goes on, whatever their pulse happens to be doing.

The baseline is lower than most people admit. Observing 225 visitors in front of Gerhard Richter paintings in Nuremberg, researchers recorded a mean viewing time per work of 32.9 seconds, with a median of 25.4 seconds. Adding in the time from people who came back for a second look raised it to a mean of about 50 seconds. That is what unhurried, self-selected gallery attention looks like: under a minute per object, on a good day, before fatigue.

So the third cathedral of the week is not a personal failing. It is the predicted result. The practical responses are unglamorous and effective. Go to fewer rooms on purpose, and pick them before you go in. Sit down before you need to. Eat before the point at which everything starts to look the same. Leave while you are still interested, which is the hardest instruction on this list and the one that most reliably preserves the next day.

And build a genuinely empty half-day into every week. Not a flexible half-day, which will be colonised by something, but a blank one.

There is decent evidence that this is where the value is. A study of 1,530 Dutch respondents found that holidaymakers were happier than non-holidaymakers before their trip, plausibly from anticipation, but that only "a very relaxed holiday trip" left them any happier after returning. The return to baseline happened regardless of how long the trip lasted. More days did not help. Less stress did.

Gilman worked this out with a camera and a co-operative volunteer. Having diagnosed museum fatigue as a physical problem, he gave the following chapter of his book to the remedy, and the remedy was seats. Put some in the itinerary.
